INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The School to Career Internship at Athol High School will promote exploration and skill building in the areas of self awareness, future planning, career development, and personal responsibility though a contracted internship placement within area communities. The experience is designed to enhance and demonstrate the relevancy of the student's academic world to the world of work and to establish a foundation for enabling students to make good decisions about career choices.
What is an Internship?
An internship is a worksite experience, in which a student completes a planned curriculum of activities or projects designed to give a broad understanding of a business or occupational area under the guidance and supervision of a worksite "mentor". By integrating the internship activities at the workplaces with school-based learning, the student develops both job and academic skills. An internship culminates in a demonstration of learning jointly evaluated by school and worksite staff. Most schools assign internships to students who are in the 11th and 12th grade.
Internships help students:
- Develop transferable academic, ethical, and workplace skills
- Apply basic skills and knowledge to real-world settings
- Learn new skills relevant to the business hosting the internship
- Increase self-esteem by assuming responsibilities in adult work settings
- Focus career interests by experiencing a job and career area in depth
- Understand workplace culture and how to relate to staff and supervisors
- Understand the connection between school, work, and achieving goals
