December 1, 2014

Dear Parents/Guardians:

I hope that everyone had a happy Thanksgiving. It's hard to believe that it's now December and the holiday season is in full swing. There were a lot of great things that happened over the Thanksgiving break. Congratulations to the football team for their big win over Mahar! However, the game would not have been able to have been played if it weren't for the boosters, parents, students, and community members who showed up Thursday morning to help clear the field. Also, I would like to congratulate the Athol High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2014. There was a wonderful induction ceremony and reception this past Saturday. I want to say thank you to the ARAA for putting together that event.

We finished up spirit week at AHS last week. The senior class won both the overall competition and the coveted lip sync title. I was really impressed with the level of effort and participation throughout the entire spirit week. In particular I was impressed by the effort and creativity that went into the lip sync performances. The lip sync competition was well attended and the students put on a very entertaining show.

I want to remind everyone of some important dates this month. First, there will be a half day on Wednesday, December 3. Next, second quarter progress reports will be issued to students on December 12. Finally, the last day of school before the holiday break will be Friday, December 19, and classes will resume on Monday, January 5, 2015.

Athletically, our fall sports season was very successful with three of our teams qualifying for tournament play, and our girls' volleyball team making it to the western Massachusetts finals. Additionally, two of our athletes were named to the all-state teams for their sport, Molly Cleveland for girls' soccer and Tessa Neverett for girls' volleyball. Winter sports start today and we are hoping for continued success this season. If you are interested in playing a winter sport, please contact Mr. King at (978) 249-2433.

Congratulations to the drama club for their successful production of A Play About a Dragon. This month we have the band and chorus concert that will be held on December 9 at 6:30.

All parents are invited to the financial aid night on December 2 at 6:00 in the AHS Media Center. Representatives from MEFA, the Commonwealth's resource on planning, saving, and paying for college will be there to provide an overview of the college financing process. Families are also encouraged to go to the MEFA website,
www.mefa.org <http://www.mefa.org>, to explore the materials they have posted online.

Finally, the parent portal is now up and running. If you would like access to your student's account, please contact the office at (978) 249-2435.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (978) 249-2435.

Happy Holidays,
Steven C. Meyer
